Research Focus
Dr. Benjamin Segal's lab focuses on understanding and treating progressive forms of multiple sclerosis (PMS) and promoting nerve regeneration in the optic nerve. His research investigates the role of specific immune cells in driving neuroinflammation and potential therapies to enhance recovery from nerve injuries. This work aims to reduce disability in older adults suffering from PMS and to develop new treatments for individuals facing vision loss due to optic nerve damage.

Research Aims
5AIM 01Investigate the role of Baci cells in chronic inflammation and neurodegeneration in the CNS.
AIM 02Characterize the antigen specificity and pathogenic potential of natural IgM antibodies from CNS-resident B cells.
AIM 03Explore the presence of similar B cell populations in human cerebrospinal fluid and their correlation with disease progression.
AIM 04Identify factors secreted by polarized myeloid cells that promote retinal ganglion cell survival and axon regrowth.
AIM 05Develop protocols to expand reparative myeloid cells in vitro for potential therapeutic use.
